About the role
Age UK Oxfordshire has delivered the Dementia Oxfordshire service for over 10 years and embedded an Admiral Nurse in the service in 2023.
This role is a continuation of the collaboration between Dementia UK and Age UK Oxfordshire, building on the initial two-year pilot.
The Admiral Nurses is a specialist nurse who offers expert practical, clinical and emotional support to families involved in the care of a person living with dementia with complex needs.
Main duties of the job
The Admiral Nurse will split their time equally:
- Supporting the Dementia Adviser team to manage complex cases, taking referrals from the Dementia Advisers and working alongside them to manage these complex cases.
- Taking a proactive role in educating and influencing the wider health and social care system in Oxfordshire to improve dementia care in the county.
DAs support people with a dementia diagnosis (PWD), their carers and families. DAs take a holistic approach to support, encouraging person centred care and providing timely and accurate information and advice. DAs signpost and refer to the right support at the right time across a wide range of services. By enabling clients to access support that they and their family need we are able to help them live as well as possible for as long as possible in their own homes and remain active in the community. The Admiral Nurse will provide support for DAs in managing their more complex cases.
The Admiral Nurse will lead on the development of our awareness and education sessions for health care professionals, and take a proactive role in influencing the wider health and social care system in Oxfordshire to improve dementia care.
You will be joining a well established team with a strong reputation, the purpose of this role is to develop the clinical expertise of the service and increase our influence on the wider dementia care system, both in the county and more widely.

Hours Remuneration and Benefits
- Band Seven Nurse equivalent (£44,623 – £51,063) pro rata
- 35 hours per week normally working 9am – 5pm with limited evening and weekend work as required
- 28 days holiday plus bank holidays, increasing to 33 days after 5 years’ service

About you
We are looking for a skilled and experienced Registered Nurse (adult/mental health/learning disability) with a passion for, and significant demonstrable track record of, providing person-centred and relationship-centred dementia care with a strong sense of advocacy and equalities for this client group. Combining direct work with families with supporting the best practice of health and social care professionals, you will call upon your impressive knowledge of bio-psychosocial interventions to improve the experience and quality of life of families affected by dementia.
The post holder will need to have the ability to work in a variety of settings, across a rural and urban geography. The role will include seeing carers and families individually, managing/supervising a team, running groups and providing education/ training, as well as balancing a proxy-clinical caseload whilst also influencing the health and social care system in the county.
We are looking for someone able to work within a third sector organisation supporting a team of advisers who are not clinically trained. Able to both recognise and complement their skills, fit into a well established team and add value through their expert knowledge.
We are also looking for someone with the skills to share their knowledge with other health professionals, able to independently build relationships with the various services involved with dementia support in Oxfordshire and increase their awareness and understanding of dementia.
About us
Dementia Oxfordshire is a service provided by Age UK Oxfordshire and is jointly funded by the County Council and NHS. We have three locality teams and a specialist Young Onset Dementia team. Including our back office support staff, we have a total of 30 team members. Our caseload increases year on year and offers an ever inceasing range of support. We have increased our funding 60% since 2022.
Our core offer of support is for every person in Oxfordshire with a diagnosis of dementia to have access to a dedicated Dementia Adviser (DA), from the point of diagnosis to either end of life or the end of independent living and a move to a care home. We also provide additional support through our dementia educational programme, virtual groups and volunteers providing social support. We work closely with GP practices and Memory Clinics in Oxfordshire.
You will be joining a committed and tight-knit team who are proud of the service they provide, and always looking for ways to improve it. We work hard to collaborate with other parts of the dementia support system in Oxfordshire and have strong links with GP practices and the memory clinics.

Interview details
