Steph joined Dementia Oxfordshire in March 2024 and currently support clients and their families in Banbury and the surrounding villages.

I feel my previous jobs lead me to my role as a Dementia Adviser. I worked for Thames Valley Police for many years working predominantly in the Control Room and Enquiries Department helping people in emergencies. Alongside this I was able to study for a Level 4 Certificate of Higher Education in Health Science and realised that I had an interest in dementia as a condition. I then worked as a carer in a residential dementia care setting and was able to see the benefits of Person Centred Care and how this could help people live a fulfilled life. Whilst I enjoyed both of these roles I wanted to do something that built on the skills I had gained, but was more directly connected with my community and the people within it.

“As a Dementia Adviser, I get to meet fascinating people from different backgrounds every day and I feel very privileged that people feel comfortable to share their stories with me. I enjoy having the time to get to know a person’s circumstances and it helps me to see how best I can support them whether this be a better understanding of the symptoms they are experiencing, helping families see how best they can support their loved one or navigating the barriers that prevent people from continuing to do the things they love and remaining in control of their life and future.

“I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has a very good community that is really open to helping people with dementia to remain connected –  whether that be with group activities or feeling supported at home. I am grateful to be in a role where I can help people access services they were not aware of and witness the positive impact this can have on their lives.”

Normal working week: Monday – Friday
