Dementia Adviser – City & Central
Email: melissaspearman@dementiaoxfordshire.org.uk
Melissa joined Dementia Oxfordshire in August 2020, right in the middle of lockdown. She recalls “Our clients were quite isolated at the time, and it was great to be able to call and meet them online to help with that.”
Prior to joining Dementia Oxfordshire, Melissa was a Dementia Champion – a specialist dementia carer for Friends of the Elderly on a dementia unit in a care home in Wallingford. She became a Dementia Champion after completing a Person-Centred Dementia Care course with the University of Worcester
Melissa is our Dementia Education Lead. She creates dementia information sessions with the help of a team of Experts by Experience – a group of people living with dementia and carers too. She also delivers the sessions with the rest of Education Team, made up of three other Dementia Advisers.
“The most rewarding part of my role is supporting people when they need it most, helping them to understand the symptoms of dementia and to find strategies that help and live a fuller life with better support because of that.”
“Outside of work, I love travelling to new places with my husband. I enjoy making my own clothes. I always have a dressmaking, knitting, embroidery or crochet project on the go, sometimes multiple at once! I also love to read and get through 2 or 3 books a week.”
Normal working week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
